A little home awaits…

Washed up on the shore of Hearthcove with no memory of who you are, you wake in a cottage in Emberhearth Village. How it begins

Lost at sea, found by a village

Every new character starts with a short opening scene played live in the engine. A hooded stranger rows away from a dark ship through a thunderstorm, lightning smashes the boat, and the tide carries them to Hearthcove's beach.

The storm. Rowing away from the ship that held you, into the rain and lightning.
Washed up. The folk of Hearthcove find you on the shore, still breathing.
Who are you? Elder Rowan asks your name, and the character creator opens.
Make your villager. Body, face, make-up and outfit tabs, with colours for almost everything.
Your villager

Chibi heroes, made your way

Start from a Male or Female template, then use any option on either.

  • Six body sliders for height, head shape and build.
  • Twelve ready-made faces, or mix your own eyes, brows, mouths, details and facial hair.
  • Hairstyles from braids and afros to mohawks, made to sit neatly under helmets and hats.
  • Patterned outfits: stripes, checks, spots and diamonds, in any two colours.
  • Armour is shaded by what it's made of: cloth weave, leather grain and glinting metal that scuffs and rusts as it wears.
Village life

A world that keeps your clock

This sky shows your own time of day and season right now, just as the game does. Trees turn gold in autumn, frost over in winter and drop blossom in spring.

  • Weather changes every hour: rain that leaves the ground wet, fog, wind, thunderstorms and snow that settles and slowly melts.
  • Walk into any building. Roofs fade away as you step inside, so you never leave the world.
  • Shops with keepers behind the counter, innkeepers who rent you a bed for the night, and travelling merchants whose wagons move town to town every few real hours.
  • Look after yourself. Food, water and energy run down through the day; eat, drink and sleep to recover.
Emberhearth Village: day, night, rain and snow. The same square as the clock turns and the weather rolls in: lamps light up, rain leaves the ground wet, and snow settles.
The Hearthstone Inn. Maren keeps the bar and rents out a bed for the night. Your steed waits by the door.
Saddle up. Whistle and your steed comes to you, wherever you left it.
Gather, craft and grow

Twelve professions, each with its own master

Fell any tree, fish any river, pond or sea, and play a short skill mini-game as you work. You can't fail, but a Perfect result brings a bigger haul or a better grade. At levels 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 a master calls you in for a test and rewards you with work gear for your trade, from Apprentice to Master.

Breed your own steed. Animals have qualities and traits; cross any two kinds for hybrids, or get lucky with a Wildborn.

Fishing that fights back

Reel while the fish rests and give it line when it runs. Land it without the line ever hitting the red for a Perfect catch.

Furnish your home

27 pieces of furniture to craft or buy and place yourself, from rugs and bookshelves to a stove you can cook at.

Upgrade and mend

Take gear you crafted up a grade, all the way to Heroic. Smiths and weavers mend armour that's worn down by battle.

Classes and combat

Choose your path at level 10

Elder Rowan's quest lets you pick one of seven classes, each with two talent trees you can mix freely. Then he sends you into the Proving Den, a training run that teaches your role as tank, healer or damage before the real dungeons.

Dungeons and bosses

Read the floor, survive the fight

Dungeon bosses hold their ground and work through hidden phases, doing more, more often and harder as the fight goes on. Every dungeon has a Story mode, a Repeatable mode once you've beaten it, and something harder still for those who reach the top. Treasure chests refill every week.

Party up. A tank, a healer and a fellow damage-dealer for hire, clearing the Hollow's spiders.
  • Tank busterA crushing blow on the tank. Block facing the boss or pop a defensive.
  • MarksCircles under the others. Step out before they land.
  • BlastA huge ring round the boss: get out, or get in close, in turns.
  • ChargeA line drawn to someone, then the boss runs it down.
  • PulseA wave through the whole room that can't be dodged. The healers' moment.
Victory. Bosses announce themselves with a roar and fall in slow motion with a fanfare.
